Dear Father, 2.8 billion people use social media. 81% of Americans have a social media account. Facebook is used by 64% of Americans age 12 and up. The typical Facebook users have 155 friends. There are 50 million Facebook pages for businesses. There are 310 million active Twitter users who use the website for real-time news updates. There are more than 400 million active monthly Instagram users. There are 100 million active monthly Pinterest users and 1 million businesses using Pinterest. There are 433 million LinkedIn users in more than 200 countries, 128 million are active in the US. There are over 100 million daily active Snapchat users. Finally, there are over 1 billion YouTube users.
Father, social media is certainly influencing our culture. It delivers us our news and information. It determines what people should and will be talking about. It creates trends. It persuades people to think in a certain way. It advances movements and gives momentum to causes. It creates and destroys relationships. It can bring us delight or cause us despair.
In other words, Father, we need You to protect us from the immense power that social media has to influence our lives. We need You to protect us from the damage it could do to our hearts and minds. We need You to help us to heal from the damage it has already done to us. We need You to protect our friends and family from the dangers of social media. We need You to show us how to use this very dangerous and powerful tool. We need You to help us be very careful using social media, knowing it is now a battleground for spiritual forces. We need Your wisdom and insight to know how to use social media for good and how to avoid using social media for bad.
Father, from the things I have read, I do not sense the leaders of powerful and influential social media companies have the things of God on their minds. Their value systems may not align with Yours. Father, the world they want to engineer may not look at all like the world You have intended. They do have enormous resources to spread their values into every home, school, business, charity, and church.
However, You are God and they are not. Father, the social media companies, aligned together as one, are but a grain of sand on your beach. They cannot do what You won’t let them do. Father, I ask that You control, direct, and steer companies like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Do with them as You please. Make them Your servants. May their products and services be used to advance Your will and Your church. Father, I do ask that You orchestrate divine appointments so that influencers inside these companies will come to faith in Jesus Christ. Father, the men and women who run these firms, several of whom are billionaires, are still human. They have limitations, weaknesses, anxieties, and insecurities. Father, use these to drive them to Your loving embrace. Use these to transform their hearts. Then, heal them. Show them Your amazing love by answering their prayers when they cry out to You for help. Amen.
