Dear Father, Lanny Davis, 72, is the former special counsel to President Bill Clinton. He is also a consultant, lobbyist, author, television commentator, and an entrepreneur in both law and public relations. He is a frequent guest on MSNBC, CNN, and CNBC. His column, the “Purple Nation”, is published in The Hill, the Huffington Post, and on the website of Fox News. He was hired by Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former personal attorney. Cohen plead guilty last week to tax and bank fraud and campaign finance violations associated with hush payments to Stormy Daniels on behalf of then-candidate Donald Trump. Davis reported to CNN that he learned from Cohen that Donald Trump knew in advance of a 2016 meeting in Trump Tower between Trump’s son, son-in-law, and campaign chairman and a Russian lawyer. Such a revelation is significant in the face of the investigation by Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the last presidential election. CNN published the story which was picked up by other media networks. Davis is now stating publicly that he doesn’t know for sure if the story is true. CNN, however, refuses to backtrack. Father, I take this opportunity with Lanny in the news to lift him up before You. Father, lead him into a personal relationship with You. Bring forgiveness into his life. May he experience the incredible peace and joy that comes when a man or woman surrenders their life to You. I ask for Your grace, mercy, compassion, and generosity in his life. Meet his needs but may he know that it is You who does so. Give him many reasons to thank You for Your goodness. In the years to come may Lanny inspire many to turn their hearts to You. Amen.
Dear Father, Stephen Graham and Amy Moffat, both of Utah, were married on August 11, 2018. This past weekend, while traveling on their honeymoon, they were both killed in a rollover crash on Route 82 in Washington state. It is believed that Amy fell asleep at the wheel. She was a nutritional therapist and he was a photographer and videographer. Father, the Graham and Moffat families must be suffering intensely today. A few weeks ago they were filled with joy and happiness. Now they know profound grief and mourning. I ask that You be very present in this tragedy. Comfort. Be generous with compassion. Be merciful. Use Your church to pour Your love into the lives of the survivors. Work in such a way that this horrific tragedy is turned into a good that makes a difference in many people’s lives. Amen.
Dear Father, the Democratic and Republican parties have their candidates for the Florida gubernatorial contest this fall. Ron DeSantis, the Republican Representative from the 6th District, will compete against Democrat Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum to succeed outgoing Florida Governor Rick Scott. DeSantis is a Harvard-educated conservative who supports many of President Trump’s policies. Gillum, on the other hand, is a progressive who has been endorsed by Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer, George Soros, and socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Gillum is a member of People for American Way, a liberal advocacy group. Father, this election will be watched across the nation. It is the battle for the future direction of American politics. Will we be a nation of conservatism or will we be a nation of progressiveness? I simply ask today that the man of Your choosing in this race will win this election. May the man who will be the greater blessing for Your church in Florida win this race this November. I also ask that You work in both men’s lives. Draw them to You. May they have encounters with You that give them a new desire to surrender their lives to You. Surround the winner with godly advisors. Amen.
Dear Father, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro is accusing the Vatican of covering up the sex abuse of thousands of children in Pennsylvania. The Roman Catholic church in the state apparently maintains an archive of documents that confirm the abuse and the effort to cover up the abuse from the public. Bishops have been accused and there have been calls for Pope Francis to resign. This scandal comes on the heels of another child abuse scandal involving the Roman Catholic church in Chile. Father, I ask today that You will protect children all across our nation from the sexual abuse by clergy. Keep them from harm. Sear the hearts and minds of priests, rectors, pastors, and clerics with guilt and conviction before they abuse a child. Give abusers a new heart, a heart where they are controlled by the desire to show spiritual and authentic godly love to children in their care. I ask that You will help this day the children and adults across America who have been abused by clergy. Help them to heal and recover from the emotional trauma. Father, weed out from positions of religious authority in America all those who are not genuine ambassadors for You. Amen.
Dear Father, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a rapid rise in sexually transmitted disease in the U.S. There were 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis in 2017, approximately 200,000 more than in 2016. The CDC reports that there has been significant growth in the number of cases over the last five years. The U.S has the highest STD infection rate in the industrialized world. STDs have historically been a problem for the gay community. However, there is evidence that STDs are increasing among heterosexuals, impacting many newborn children. Experts have identified several reasons for the increase. With HIV less of a public concern, condom use has fallen. There is a decline in government funding for STD prevention. More accurate testing identifies more infections than before. Dating apps are increasing the sexual connections between strangers. Father, I ask that You protect the innocent from STDs. Protect every man, woman, or child out there who is innocent who may unknowingly become a victim of an STD. Watch over them and keep them safe. I also pray that You bring forgiveness and healing to all who have an STD but whose hearts are now repentant. Show your incredible mercy and grace to them. Father, for the sake of the innocent and the repentant, give the medical researchers a breakthrough to conquer these diseases. Amen.
Dear Father, every year since 1986, in late summer, the Burning Man event is held in Black Rock Desert 100 miles northwest of Reno, NV. It is expected that 70,000 people will attend the event this week. Journalists who cover the event portray a celebration of the rebellion of man from God. Organizers have identified radical inclusion, self-reliance, self-expression, and immediacy as the highest ideals. In short, “let people do whatever they want to do the moment they want to do it and be whomever they want to be for a week in the desert.” A virtual city in the desert is constructed each year, with intersections and traffic lights. The culmination of the event is the burning of a giant wooden figure, The Man. The event, which people pay $ 1,200 to attend, is known for intense all-night parties, elaborate costumes, and nudity. Attendees have reported rampant sexual harassment and many police arrests. Father, I ask that You will use this event, in some way, to bring people into a personal relationship with You. May it cause attendees to reconsider faith. May attendees be left unsatisfied, longing for a more real spiritual experience. Father, be very present at that event and rescue the hearts of anyone there who has roots in the Christian faith. Amen.
